Job description

The Area Retail Manager is responsible for the operational management and performance of a portfolio of Alice House Hospice retail shops. The post holder will provide leadership, guidance and support to Shop Managers and their teams, ensuring that each shop operates to the highest standards of customer service, merchandising, compliance and financial performance. The Area Retail Manager will work closely with the Chief Executive to maximise income from retail operations, promote the work of Alice House Hospice within the local community, and ensure the retail estate contributes effectively to the Hospice's fundraising objectives. Retail Operations Support the delivery of the Hospice Retail Strategy through effective day-to-day management of the retail estate. Manage the performance of a designated group of Hospice shops to maximise sales, profitability and Gift Aid income. Provide visible leadership, coaching and support to Shop Managers to achieve agreed income and expenditure targets. Monitor shop performance through regular visits, analysing sales, costs and key performance indicators. Identify opportunities to increase income through improved merchandising, stock management, promotions and customer engagement. Ensure all shops are presented to the highest standards of cleanliness, merchandising and customer service. Ensure pricing standards are consistent across all shops to maximise income from donated goods. Support the effective distribution of donated stock and furniture across the retail estate to maximise sales opportunities. Work with the Warehouse team to ensure efficient stock processing, stock movement and recycling. Promote and maximise Gift Aid registrations and income across all retail locations. Minimise waste by developing recycling and sustainability initiatives. People Management Recruit, motivate, develop and support Shop Managers, Assistant Managers, Retail Assistants and volunteers. Carry out regular one-to-one meetings, appraisals and performance reviews with direct reports. Identify training and development needs and ensure all staff receive appropriate induction and ongoing training. Support Shop Managers in recruiting, developing and retaining volunteers. - Foster a positive, inclusive and high-performing team culture. Manage staffing issues in accordance with Hospice policies and procedures. Financial Management Support the preparation of annual budgets and provide accurate sales forecasts. - Monitor income and expenditure across the retail estate, taking prompt action where performance falls below target. Ensure appropriate financial controls and cash handling procedures are followed at all times. Compliance and Governance Ensure all retail locations comply with Hospice policies, Health & Safety legislation and relevant retail regulations. Conduct regular audits to ensure compliance with trading standards, security procedures and Gift Aid processes. Ensure all accidents, incidents and maintenance issues are reported and addressed promptly. Community Engagement Build strong relationships with local businesses, community groups and supporters to increase donations and raise the profile of Alice House Hospice. Support local marketing initiatives and Hospice campaigns to increase footfall and donations. Represent the Hospice professionally at community events and networking opportunities when required. Reporting Produce regular reports on retail performance, highlighting achievements, trends, risks and opportunities. Monitor key performance indicators and implement action plans where improvements are required.
