Assistant Accountant | Romsey | Full Time | Office Based | £30,000

We're recruiting on behalf of a well-established organisation based in Romsey that is looking to appoint an Assistant Accountant to join its friendly and collaborative finance team.
This is a varied role offering exposure to all aspects of the finance function, from day-to-day accounting and month-end activities through to reporting, analysis and continuous improvement projects. You'll work closely with senior finance colleagues and gain valuable experience within a supportive environment where your development is encouraged.
The Role
As Assistant Accountant, you'll play a key role in ensuring the smooth running of the finance department while supporting accurate financial reporting and helping to drive process improvements across the business.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Accounting
• Prepare routine reporting on customer balances and outstanding accounts.
• Complete bank, petty cash and payment platform reconciliations.
• Produce aged creditor reports and reconcile supplier statements.
• Prepare weekly supplier payment runs, ensuring robust financial controls are maintained.
• Build strong relationships with suppliers and resolve account queries efficiently.
• Support customer account management and credit control activities.
• Process employee expenses, ensuring compliance with company policies.
• Assist with month-end close, including reconciliations, journals and ledger maintenance.
• Support balance sheet reconciliations and wider accounting activities.
• Assist with the preparation and submission of VAT returns.
• Prepare schedules and supporting documentation for external audits.
• Support intercompany reconciliations and periodic stock accounting activities.
• Ensure sales and purchase ledgers are maintained accurately and closed within reporting deadlines.
• Assist with royalty calculations and other periodic financial reporting requirements.
• Work closely with operational teams to ensure stock movements are accurately reflected within the accounts.
Reporting & Business Support
• Assist with the preparation of budgets and forecasts.
• Support the production of monthly management accounts and financial reporting.
• Prepare financial analysis to support operational and commercial decision-making.
• Assist with cost monitoring and identify opportunities to improve financial performance.
• Contribute to projects focused on improving financial processes and reporting.
Systems & Continuous Improvement
• Maintain and develop finance reporting using Excel, ERP systems and Power BI.
• Produce reports and dashboards that provide meaningful business insight.
• Support ongoing improvements to finance systems, reporting tools and internal processes.
• Assist with preparing financial information for business cases and commercial projects.
• Help document finance policies and procedures to support consistency and business continuity.
• Provide guidance and support to colleagues on finance processes where required.
• Ensure financial controls and company procedures are followed, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and accuracy.
About You
You'll be an organised and motivated finance professional who enjoys working in a collaborative environment and takes pride in producing accurate, high-quality work.
Ideally, you'll have:
• Previous experience in an Assistant Accountant, Accounts Assistant or similar finance role.
• A good understanding of reconciliations, ledgers and month-end accounting processes.
• Experience supporting VAT returns and audit preparation.
• Strong Excel skills with confidence analysing financial data.
• Experience using accounting software or ERP systems.
• Excellent organisational skills with strong attention to detail.
• A proactive approach and the confidence to manage multiple priorities.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to build effective working relationships across the business.
• A genuine interest in improving processes and developing your accounting knowledge.
Desirable
• Experience within a commercial finance environment.
• Exposure to budgeting and forecasting.
• Experience using Power BI or similar reporting tools.
• AAT qualified, studying towards a professional qualification, or qualified by experience.
