General Manager | London Salary: DOE Are you an experienced garden retail leader looking for an opportunity to make a real impact? We are seeking a commercially minded and people-focused General Manager to lead a successful and well-established independent garden centre. This is a senior leadership role offering the chance to influence strategy, drive operational excellence, and shape the future direction of a respected garden centre business that combines retail excellence with a strong commitment to customer service, staff development, and community engagement. For the right individual, there is also a genuine opportunity to progress into a Director-level position in the future, playing a key role in the long-term success of the business. The Role As General Manager, you will work closely with senior stakeholders to oversee all aspects of the garden centre, ensuring profitable performance while maintaining exceptional standards across retail operations, customer experience, and team development. You will take ownership of the day-to-day management of the business while also contributing to long-term strategic planning, commercial success, and organisational development. Key Responsibilities • Lead and develop a multi-disciplinary management team across the garden centre. • Drive commercial performance, profitability, and operational efficiency. • Maintain exceptional customer service standards and resolve complex customer issues. • Support budgeting, financial planning, cash flow management, and business reporting. • Build strong relationships with suppliers, growers, industry contacts, and external partners. • Oversee recruitment, training, performance management, and employee development. • Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety and retail legislation. • Manage relationships with contractors, consultants, and service providers. • Support and develop marketing initiatives and promotional campaigns. • Monitor and improve profit margins, stock management, and business performance. • Undertake Duty Manager responsibilities when required, including alternate weekends. • Contribute to strategic projects, business improvements, capital investments, and future growth opportunities. About You We are looking for a confident and capable garden centre leader who can balance strategic thinking with hands-on operational management. You will ideally have: • Senior management experience within a garden centre or horticultural retail. • Strong leadership experience managing teams and developing managers. • Empathy and passion in supporting the community. • Excellent commercial awareness and financial acumen. • Experience analysing business performance and implementing improvements. • Strong organisational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities. • A sound understanding of health and safety legislation and compliance. • A passion for delivering exceptional customer experiences. • The ability to manage confidential and sensitive matters professionally.
