Job Summary
The post holder will assist the GPs and practice
nursing team in the service and delivery of care to the practice population.
Working under the direct supervision of the Lead
Practice Nurse (Staffing), the post holder will undertake tasks and duties
delegated by the Lead Practice Nurse or another suitably qualified regulated
professional.
The post holder will work collaboratively with the
general practice team to meet the needs of patients, following practice
policies and procedures and working within the limits of their training and
competence.
The organisation will ensure that the post holder
has access to appropriate supervision and a named individual who can provide
advice and support on a day-to-day basis.
Key Responsibilities
The following are the core responsibilities of the
Healthcare Assistant. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out
other tasks as described by the GP Partners, Practice Manager or Clinical
Supervisor. This will depend on factors such as workload and staffing levels
and must remain within the post holders training, competence, and delegated
authority.
The role and needs of the Practice may change over
time, and the postholder will be expected to adapt to changes in service
delivery and undertake any other duties appropriate to the role, skills and
grade, as reasonably directed by the Nurse Manager, Practice Manager or
management team.
Clinical Skills Health and Wellbeing
Undertake, record, and follow relevant guidelines
for tasks for which appropriate training and competency have been completed,
including:
a. Urinalysis and preparation of specimens for
investigation by the pathology laboratory
b. Measuring and recording physiological
observations in routine presentations, including:
Blood pressure
Pulse rate and rhythm
Temperature
Height and weight, including body mass index
Visual acuity
Venepuncture
ECG recording
Hearing screening
NHS health checks
Weight-management measurements and support within
competence
Diabetes foot screening
c. Prepare and maintain clinical environments and
equipment before, during and after patient-care interventions
d. Assist in raising awareness of health and
wellbeing and how it can be promoted
e. Provide accurate and appropriate information to
patients and groups within the limits of own competence
f. Support and monitor patients during nebulisation
therapy
g. Undertake any other clinical duties appropriate
to training, demonstrate competence, and delegated authority
Role Development Opportunities
Subject to service requirements, appropriate
training, competency assessment and delegation, opportunities to develop the
role may include:
Spirometry reviews
InstantCheck monitoring
Wound management
Vaccinations, for example influenza vaccination
Administration Responsibilities
a. Order and maintain appropriate levels of
clinical stock as directed by the Lead Nurse and or Practice Manager
Information Processes
a. Record information and activities undertaken
with patients and carers accurately and promptly, using manual or computer
systems as appropriate
b. Maintain the confidentiality of information
relating to patients, relatives, staff and the practice
c. Take appropriate precautions when transmitting
information
