Job description

Do you have what it takes to be an Operating Theatre Escort Porter? This post holder will work with the Theatre team to deliver direct and indirect patient care and at all times to work under the direction of a qualified member of Nursing/ODP staff. To escort surgical patients to and from the operating theatre and work alongside theatre staff to provide excellent patient care. Main Duties: Support the safe and efficient transfer of patients between wards, departments, theatres and recovery areas. Provide reassurance and support to patients and relatives during the peri- operative journey. Carry out essential patient checks and communicate effectively, adapting to individual patient needs and preferences. Assist clinical teams by maintaining a clean, safe, and well-stocked theatre environment in line with infection prevention and control standards. Transport equipment, clinical waste, specimens, and soiled instruments safely and in accordance with Trust policies. Support stock management, including storage and replenishment of theatre supplies and equipment. Liaise with multidisciplinary teams and assist visitors within the department. Report faults, maintain health and safety standards, and adhere to safeguarding requirements at all times. Support patient flow within theatre pathways, including day-case admissions, anaesthetic room assistance, and mortuary transfers when required. Respond to emergency bleep calls and provide support across theatre complexes as needed. Direct Patient Care: • To facilitate the smooth and safe transfers of patients throughout their anaesthetic, surgical and recovery and procedure periods between wards or departments and the operating theatres and recovery. • Contribute to the ongoing support of patients and their family members during the transfer to theatre. • Undertake standard checking procedure when collecting patients from wards and departments. • Communicate in a manner and pace appropriate to the patients ability, personal beliefs and preferences within trust and legal constraints • To be aware of the safeguarding guidelines for vulnerable patients. Indirect Patient Care • Support, welcome and assist visitors to the department • Liaise with other professionals as required within the boundaries of the role • To undertake domestic duties as required e.g. cleaning floors in theatres, moving clinical rubbish and sharps bins as required and in line with current infection control guidelines. • Assist with stocking of unit – sterile supplies and pharmacy • Stocking up theatre hats, blue slide sheets, oxygen masks and oxygen tubing. • Emptying of sterile instruments and putting away in appropriate storage place • Assist the materials managements team in putting away stock • To assist with putting away of IV fluid/pharmacy stock when delivered • Transport soiled instruments and clinical rubbish to designated collection points • To handle and transport specimens in line with trust policy • To report any damaged equipment to the appropriate person • To observe health and safety regulations at all times with grade and nature of the service. • Help put away stock in general theatre storeroom Additional Duties and Responsibilities: • To liaise when required with all trust theatre complexes when support is needed • Support ambulatory day admission patient’s from admissions suites to anaesthetic room • Contribute to the ongoing support of patients and their family members during the transfer to theatre • To remain with patient’s in the anaesthetic room until relived by the anaesthetic assistant. • Facilitate the transfer of the deceased to the mortuary. • To carry an emergency bleep and react as required – generally the role of the ported in charge of the shift. • Undertake Band 2 related competencies • Supporting other departments with in the trust
