Job description

• Immediate start, temporary role paying up to £350 per day • Strong knowledge of Teachers Pensions, LGPS and USS essential • Hybrid working, two days on site and three days remote Interim Payroll and Pensions Administrator | West Midlands | Immediate Start | Up to £350 per day Location: West Midlands (hybrid, two days on site, three days remote) Contract type: Temporary, initial one month with potential to extend Start date: Immediate Day rate: Up to £350 per day, depending on experience Sector: Higher Education The role A well established organisation in the West Midlands is looking for an experienced Payroll and Pensions Administrator to join its transactional finance team on a temporary basis, with an immediate start. This is a hands on role supporting a busy payroll function during a period of staff absence, with real scope to make an immediate impact. You will work closely with the Payroll and Pensions Manager, providing cover across multiple monthly payrolls covering around 2,000 to 2,500 employees. The team is currently under pressure due to sickness absence and a forthcoming resignation, so this person needs to hit the ground running with minimal handholding. What you will be doing • Supporting the processing of multiple monthly payrolls, including a small ad hoc payroll strand • Managing pension scheme administration and submissions, including Teachers Pensions, Local Government Pension Scheme and USS • Building and checking manual files ahead of statutory pension submission deadlines • Processing new starters, leavers and contractual changes • Checking timesheets and calculation reports for accuracy • Using Excel to support process improvement, including formulas, pivot tables and lookups • Flexing across different payroll areas as priorities shift, rather than being fixed to one task What we are looking for • Strong working knowledge of pension schemes, particularly Teachers Pensions, LGPS and USS • Experience with Agresso or Unit4 is highly desirable but not essential; experience with any major payroll or finance system is welcome • A background in high volume, monthly payroll processing • Confident Excel skills, including formulas and pivot tables • A proactive, all round payroll professional who is comfortable picking up varied tasks at short notice • Someone who can work independently from day one, with minimal training required Working arrangements This role offers hybrid working, with two days on site and three days remote once established, though initial training will require more time on site. Core working hours are flexible, with start times available between roughly 7:30am and 9:30am to accommodate childcare and other commitments, though flexibility to support payroll deadlines is important given the critical nature of this role. Please note this role will be subject to a DBS check. Why this role This is a genuinely varied temporary assignment for a payroll professional who enjoys getting stuck in and making a difference quickly, with an immediate start and a competitive day rate on offer. You will be trusted to work autonomously, supporting a manager who is candid about where the gaps are and open to your expertise shaping how things are done.
