Main Responsibilities and duties
The
following are the core responsibilities of the Phlebotomist in delivering
health services. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other
tasks. This will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing
levels:
Obtaining
patient consent for the collection of a blood sample and centrifuge samples as
required
Performing
venepuncture in accordance with practice protocols
Maintaining
accurate patient records on the clinical IT system and ensuring specimens are
ready for onward transportation
The correct
labelling, packaging and storing of samples
Ensuring
samples are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner
Maintaining
effective liaison with the NHS Trust laboratory staff
Working
collaboratively with the nursing team, seeking guidance when necessary for
patient related matters
Being an
integral part of the general practice team
Ensuring
clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in
accordance with the organisations IPC Policy
Working within
national and local protocols where these exist
Be aware of
duties and responsibilities regarding current legislation and adhere to
practice policies and procedures on safeguarding adults and safeguarding
children
Supporting
the administrative team on an as-required basis
Undertaking all
mandatory training and induction programmes
Maintaining a
clean, tidy, effective working area at all times
