Job description
• To provide a venepuncture service within the Trust in accordance with UHP and departmental policies and procedures.
• To liaise with patients, carers, nursing and medical staff in an appropriate and professional manner.
• Informing patients of the venepuncture procedure to be carried out in a caring reassuring manner that is aimed at their level of understanding.
• Ensure suitable stocks of venepuncture equipment are available prior to visiting patients and replenish used stock as required.
• Ensure that requests for blood are correctly filled in with the minimum acceptance data present.
• Ensure that all samples collected are correctly labelled and meet the acceptance criteria for the Pathology department concerned.
• Have the ability to assess if veins are suitable for venepuncture, following standard operating procedures. Eg Avoiding Intra Venous/transfusion sites.
• Recognise the needs of the patient, who may be very anxious or distressed due to the nature of their illness or the procedure, whilst being sympathetic and considerate towards them.
• Will assist the training officer in the training of new staff.
• Be familiar and competent in the use of Pathology computer systems iLAB & iCM for patient test request entry.
