Primary Care Nurse

Main duties of the job The following are the core responsibilities of the practice nurse. • Assist in and perform routine tasks related to patient care as directed by senior nursing staff and GPs • Cervical Smears/Cytology • Long-term conditions reviews (e.g. diabetic checks, asthma checks, care planning, non-diabetic hyperglycaemia checks) • Routine immunisations (e.g. shingles, pneumococcal, flu) • Childhood vaccinations • Contraception / pill checks • Wound care / ulcer care / Removal of Sutures/Doppler • New Patient Medicals/Urinalysis • Travel vaccinations (desirable) • ECGs • Asthma/Peak Flow Readings(desirable) • Venepuncture/Phlebotomy • Hypertension Management • Chaperoning and assisting patients where appropriate who are being examined by another clinician • Assisting GPs with minor surgery and coil fittings • Requesting pathology tests, for example urine culture, swabs Following agreed clinical protocols with referral to senior nurses or GPs as appropriate Job responsibilities As per the main duties of the job, the practice nurse must be competent to perform all general duties.
