Job description

1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant – Year 1 Hours: 8:45am – 3:15pm daily (30-minute lunch break) We are seeking an experienced and dedicated 1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant to support a Year 1 pupil with additional needs on a full-time basis. About the Child The pupil: • Has a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). • Is non-verbal and communicates through alternative methods and behaviours. • Frequently moves between activities without sustained engagement or meaningful interaction. • Has a strong fascination with water and requires close supervision to ensure safety and maintain focus on learning activities. Key Responsibilities • Provide dedicated 1:1 support throughout the school day. • Encourage engagement in learning activities and support the development of attention and concentration skills. • Use appropriate communication strategies, including visual supports and other ASD-friendly approaches. • Support the child's social, emotional, and behavioural development. • Implement guidance from the class teacher, SENCO, and external professionals. • Closely monitor and manage transitions between activities and learning environments. • Ensure the child's safety and wellbeing at all times. • Record observations and provide feedback on progress and behaviour as required. Essential Requirements • Previous experience supporting children with ASD and complex communication needs. • Understanding of strategies to support non-verbal children. • Strong behaviour management and de-escalation skills. • Patient, resilient, and proactive approach. • Ability to build positive relationships and maintain consistent boundaries. • Comfortable working independently while also collaborating effectively with school staff. Ideal Candidate We are looking for a strong, experienced SEN TA who can provide consistent support, remain calm and adaptable, and help the child access learning while meeting their individual communication, sensory, and behavioural needs. Hours: 8:45am – 3:15pm (30-minute unpaid lunch break)
