Principal Engineer

Principal Engineer Hybrid Working - London - 2 days a week on site. Financial Services Lorien's leading banking client is looking for a strong Principal Engineer to join a high-profile transformation programme delivering a next-generation cloud-native customer onboarding platform. This is a hands-on technical leadership role, combining architecture, engineering excellence, and team mentorship to help deliver a business-critical platform. While experience within Banking or Financial Services is preferred, we are also keen to speak with candidates from technology-driven organisations, start-ups, scale-ups, or other complex engineering environments with experience building modern cloud-native platforms The ideal candidate for this position has strong expertise in Cloud-Native Microservice Development (Python/Java), Containerisation (Docker/ECS/EKS), and GitLab, CI/CD, Terraform. This role is based in London. This role will be Via Umbrella. Working in a Hybrid Model of 2 days a week on site. Key Experience • Provide technical leadership across multiple engineering squads, driving engineering standards and best practices. • Design and develop cloud-native microservices using Python and/or Java. • Lead architecture and design for distributed, event-driven systems. • Champion modern DevOps, CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, and cloud engineering practices. • Mentor and coach a team of approximately 10 junior engineers, conducting code reviews and supporting technical development. • Collaborate with architects, product owners, and senior stakeholders to ensure successful programme delivery. • Drive production readiness through observability, resilience, automated testing, and secure engineering practices. Key Skills • Experience operating as a Principal Engineer, Staff Engineer, or equivalent senior technical leader. • Strong hands-on development experience with Python and/or Java. • Expertise in AWS, Docker, ECS/EKS (Kubernetes), and cloud-native microservices. • Experience with Apache Kafka and event-driven architectures. • Strong knowledge of GitLab CI/CD, Terraform, Infrastructure as Code, and Continuous Delivery. • Proven ability to establish engineering standards, improve code quality, and influence technical direction. • Experience mentoring, coaching, and developing engineering teams.
