Radiology Assistant

Overall Responsibilities Patient Care • Welcome, identify, and prepare patients for radiology and cardiology procedures. • Explain procedures within the scope of the role and answer routine patient questions. • Obtain and document relevant clinical history to support imaging requests. • Assess patients for mobility, communication and additional support needs. • Assist patients before, during, and after examinations, ensuring comfort, dignity, and privacy. • Monitor patients during and following procedures, escalating concerns promptly. • Recognise signs of patient deterioration and initiate appropriate emergency procedures. Radiology Support • Prepare imaging rooms and equipment for examinations. • Assist radiographers and radiologists during: General X-ray examinations, Fluoroscopy procedures, CT examinations, Ultrasound procedures (where appropriate), Interventional radiology procedures. • Position patients under the direction of registered staff. • Assist with the safe transfer and handling of patients. • Support infection prevention and control measures. • Maintain stock levels and prepare consumables for procedures. Cardiology Support • Perform resting 12-lead ECGs. • Fit and remove ambulatory ECG (Holter) monitors. • Fit and remove ambulatory blood pressure monitors. • Prepare patients for echocardiography and exercise tolerance testing. • Assist cardiac physiologists, nurses, or cardiologists during diagnostic procedures. Clinical Observations • Record baseline observations as required, including: Blood pressure, Pulse, Respiratory rate, Oxygen saturation, Temperature. • Document findings accurately in patient records. • Escalate abnormal observations according to local policy. Infection Prevention and Safety • Clean and disinfect clinical equipment between patients. • Prepare examination rooms in accordance with infection prevention protocols. • Adhere to radiation protection regulations and local rules. • Correctly use personal protective equipment (PPE). • Safely manage clinical waste and sharps. Clinical Administration • Verify patient identity using approved identification procedures. • Ensure consent processes have been completed where appropriate. • Accurately enter patient information into Compucare, Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS), cardiology information systems, and electronic patient records. • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with data protection legislation and local policies. Communication • Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, carers, and members of the multidisciplinary team. • Liaise with radiographers, radiologists, cardiac physiologists, nurses, and ward staff to facilitate effective patient care. • Provide reassurance to anxious or vulnerable patients. Professional Responsibilities • Work with the scope of competence and seek support when required. • Participate in mandatory training and continuing professional development. • Maintain professional standards in line with organisational policies. • Participate in clinical audits, service improvement initiatives and quality assurance activities. Health and Safety • Comply with manual handling policies and use appropriate moving and handling equipment. • Follow radiation safety regulations and local rules. • Report incidents, near misses, and clinical risks using the organisations reporting system.
