Job description

School Crossing Patrol & ST SupervisorLocation: OverviewWe have a fantastic opportunity for a School Crossing Patrol Supervisor to join our Schools' Sustainable Travel Team within the Public Transport Service. You will be part of a busy and friendly team who work with schools to encourage sustainable and active travel by promoting and providing a number of in house and external initiatives all designed to change behaviours towards a car-free school run. Providing School Crossing Patrollers at some of our busiest schools helps to provide a safe route for children to get to school. This role is being advertised as term-time only, ensuring coverage during our busiest periods. This is an exciting and flexible supervisory role which can be adapted to suit your work and life balance if required. This position is offered on term-time only, 32 hours per week/ 39 weeks. The advertised salary will be pro-rated. About usBuckinghamshire Council is a relatively new organisation that combines the strengths and expertise of the previous five councils in the county to create positive change for local people, communities, and businesses. We are firmly focused on the future and have made a clear commitment to serve residents better and to provide stronger representation for Buckinghamshire, both locally and nationally. About the roleYou will make a meaningful difference for Buckinghamshire's school communities by supervising the Councils school crossing patrollers (SCPs) located in the North of Buckinghamshire, including the Aylesbury vale area and north side of Wycombe. This equates to approximately 25 direct reports. Line management duties include providing training, mentoring and support as required to support colleagues and service delivery. This is an existing role with a great combination of being out and about visiting your patrollers, whilst you will also spend some of your time in the office on management and monitoring tasks. Your main responsibilities will be to visit all your patrollers at least once during the school half term, arrange their training and manage HR processes associated with having direct reports. Our sites typically operate between 8am and 9am in the morning and 2pm to 3:30pm in the afternoon. You will be required to manage and monitor your SCPs to ensure that best practice is being followed, and the service is being delivered safely and effectively. This includes monitoring performance, dealing with Human Resource related issues, including regular 1:1s, Coaching for Performance sessions, and managing safety issues reported. We adhere to the guidelines as set out by Road Safety GB and our own School Crossing Patrol Codes of Practice and Guidelines. At each site visit you are required to undertake dynamic site assessments during every half termly site visit, whilst reporting issues to your Line Manager, maintenance and parking issues to Fix My Street, and escalating more complex issues if necessary. You will also be required to log all incidents, near misses, verbal and physical abuse onto the Councils Assessnet system and escalate to Thames Valley Police as required. Attendance at Regional Meetings are a good place to network, share best practice and helps with issues. Sometimes a site has to be disestablished as it may no longer meet criteria for instance, and you will be required to support schools and local communities by providing guidance on securing funding and sponsorship. Some of your tasks you will be working closely with the SCP Supervisor for the South of the County such as ensuring School Crossing Patrol Codes of Practice and Guidelines are current, including but not limited to site establishment and disestablishment procedures, and developing and adopting a sponsorship pack for potential site sponsors. As well as ordering of school crossing patrollers equipment and uniform and associated financial transaction. Since both School Crossing Patrol Supervisor roles are part time, the working hours are co-ordinated to ensure coverage through the week and during periods of leave. This is an exciting and varied role and there will be collaboration with other member of the Schools Sustainable Travel Team to provide school travel planning support in particular where this corresponds to school crossing patrol sites. Other features of the job are likely to include advertising, marketing, and promotions all with the aim of encouraging behaviour change away from private car use. Your office base will be in Walton Street, Aylesbury, but you will be required to travel around the County for site visits and meetings. On-the-go: Our 'on-the-go' roles mean you'll usually start and finish your day from a base, moving around between different locations throughout the day. You won't need a fixed desk to work from, but you'll have access to our network where you can keep up to date with admin and the latest staff updates. About youExperience or detailed knowledge in the transportation field is not essential but you must be aware of the social, health and environmental benefits that active and sustainable travel choices can bring. You should be able to use a computer for normal word processing and spreadsheet functions and be a skilled communicator with excellent interpersonal skills. You should also have the ability to work on your own initiative, as well as having a flexible approach to team working. An enhanced check with the Disclosure and Barring service will be required Other informationFor further information on this role please see the attached job summary.
