SEMH Teaching Assistant Location: Brighton & Hove Start Date: September 2026 (Immediate Starts Available) Contract: Full-Time / Part-Time Opportunities Available Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience Academics is currently recruiting compassionate and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistants to support pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs across a range of primary schools in Brighton & Hove. This rewarding role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about supporting children facing emotional and behavioural challenges. You will work closely with teachers, SENCOs, pastoral teams, and external professionals to help pupils overcome barriers to learning, develop positive relationships, and achieve their full potential. The role is particularly suited to those considering careers in Education, Educational Psychology, Counselling, Youth Work, Social Work, or Mental Health Support. Key Responsibilities: • Provide 1:1 and small group support for pupils with SEMH needs. • Build positive and trusting relationships with children to support their emotional wellbeing. • Assist pupils in developing self-regulation, resilience, and social skills. • Support behaviour management strategies and personalised intervention plans. • Help pupils engage positively with learning and school life. • Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, parents, and external agencies. • Monitor progress and contribute to the development of support strategies. The Ideal Candidate Will Have: • Experience working with children or young people, particularly those with additional needs or behavioural challenges. • A calm, patient, and empathetic approach. • Strong communication and relationship-building skills. • The ability to remain resilient and positive in challenging situations. • A genuine passion for supporting children's emotional and educational development. • Experience in education, youth work, care, coaching, mental health support, or similar fields is highly desirable.
