Job description

SEMH Mentor – Reading Read Education is proud to be working in partnership with a specialist school in Reading to recruit a dedicated and compassionate SEMH Mentor. This is an incredibly rewarding opportunity for someone who is passionate about supporting young people and helping them overcome barriers to learning and personal development. The Role As an SEMH (Social, Emotion and Mental Health) Mentor, you will work closely with students who primarily have, or display, deregulated behaviours and require additional emotional and behavioural support to access education successfully. The successful candidate will play a vital role in helping students develop confidence, resilience, emotional regulation and positive engagement within the school environment. A key part of the role is the ability to build trusted, meaningful relationships with young people who may have experienced challenges in education, social settings or at home. Through patience, consistency and understanding, you will become a positive role model and advocate for students' success. Key Responsibilities • Supporting students on a one-to-one and small group basis. • Helping pupils regulate their emotions and behaviours throughout the school day. • Building strong, trusting relationships with young people. • Promoting positive behaviour and engagement in learning. • Working collaboratively with teaching staff, pastoral teams and external professionals. • Encouraging the development of social, emotional and communication skills. • Creating a safe and supportive learning environment. The Ideal Candidate • Has experience working with young people, either within education, youth work, care, coaching, mentoring or similar settings. • Demonstrates excellent relationship-building skills. • Remains calm, patient and resilient when faced with challenging situations. • Has a genuine passion for supporting vulnerable young people. • Understands the importance of consistency, empathy and positive reinforcement. • Experience supporting individuals with social, emotional, mental health or behavioural needs would be advantageous. What's on Offer? • A highly rewarding role where you can make a genuine difference to young people's lives. • A supportive and welcoming team environment. • Ongoing professional development and training opportunities. • Opportunity to work within a specialist educational setting. • The role will transfer onto a permanent contract following 12 consecutive weeks of successful employment. If you are looking for a career where no two days are the same and where your support can have a lasting impact on young people's futures, we'd love to hear from you.
