Job description

IPS Group is working exclusively with this highly regarded Global Insurer on a new role which has come about due to the retirement of their Senior Casualty Underwriter. This is a unique opportunity for the Birmingham underwriting market which will offer full autonomy to write business. This highly regarded insurer has a strong presence in the UK regional market. Based in Birmingham, this role sits within a successful and underwriting team and offers the chance to work on a diverse portfolio of large corporate risks across the UK and multinational programmes. As this position has become available due to the retirement of a long-standing and respected underwriter, it will offer a rare platform to inherit and grow a well-structured, profitable book. You will take ownership of a broad casualty portfolio spanning the Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds and Glasgow broking markets, with a key focus on driving and managing business from the Birmingham hub. The portfolio includes a wide variety of risks across sectors such as: • Retail & supermarkets • Manufacturing & metalworking • Food & beverage • Wholesale & distribution • Utilities & renewables • Strong appetite for construction and renewables • Open to multinational programmes with scope to expand this book • Structured and cautious approach to US exposures This is a technical and commercially focused underwriting role, where you will balance disciplined risk selection with strong broker engagement to grow the portfolio sustainably. Key duties include: • Underwrite new and renewal casualty business within a large corporate segment (£50k+ premiums up to £75 million, £50m+ turnover) • Manage and grow an existing portfolio with a focus on quality over volume • Build strong trading relationships with key brokers including Aon, Marsh, Lockton and Willis • Handle complex and multinational programmes, including exposure to global placements • Maintaining regular contact with brokers and maintain a visible market presence This is a business that prioritises underwriting discipline and judgement over distribution-driven volume, giving you the platform to write risks properly and take ownership of outcomes. To be considered you must be an experienced Casualty Underwriter with strong technical capability and underwriting discipline. This could however be at Underwriter level looking to step up to Senior Underwriter level. You must be confident in handling large, complex corporate risks combined with strong broker management and trading skills. Full flexibility will be offered based on your requirements with a minimum expectation of being in the Birmingham Office 1 or 2 days per week combined with time in front of Brokers. This is a rare chance to step into a highly autonomous senior role where you will work within an underwriting-led business, not distribution-driven.
