Senior Finance Officer

Butler Rose is delighted to be working alongside a public sector client based in Harrow. They are seeking an experienced Senior Finance Officer to join a busy finance team. This is a temporary role, up until end of October 2026. The role offers hybrid working (mix of home and office/onsite client premises) and will pay up to £29.97 per hour via umbrella company. This role will play a key part in supporting effective financial management across the organisation, including budget preparation, monitoring, forecasting, year-end closure, financial reporting and continuous improvement activities. The successful candidate will provide professional financial guidance to stakeholders, ensuring accurate, timely and compliant financial information supports decision-making. This is an excellent opportunity for a finance professional with strong technical accounting skills who enjoys working in a collaborative environment and contributing to service improvements within the public sector. Key Responsibilities The successful candidate will: Support the preparation, monitoring and closure of revenue and capital budgets. Provide financial advice, guidance and challenge to budget managers and senior stakeholders. Produce accurate monthly budget monitoring reports, forecasts and financial projections. Support financial modelling, cost analysis, fees and charges calculations, salary forecasting and business case development. Undertake balance sheet monitoring, including analysis of debt profiles, debtor positions and provisions. Extract, analyse and interpret financial data from financial systems to support management reporting. Prepare financial reports, commentaries and supporting information for management teams and senior decision-makers. Assist with year-end accounts processes, including accruals, journals, working papers and audit requirements. Complete statutory, government and financial returns within required deadlines. Prepare and submit grant claims accurately and efficiently. Provide financial training and support to budget managers where required. Review and maintain financial procedures, working papers and process documentation. Investigate and resolve financial queries, working closely with service teams. Participate in transformation, improvement and cross-functional projects. Qualifications & Experience: Up-to-date knowledge of accounting practices, ideally gained within a public sector environment. Experience of budget preparation, monitoring, forecasting and financial reporting. Experience supporting budget holders and providing financial advice to stakeholders. Strong numerical and analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex financial information. Advanced Excel skills, including experience with functions such as VLOOKUP and Pivot Tables. Experience extracting and analysing data from General Ledger or financial management systems. Ability to build effective working relationships and communicate confidently with colleagues at all levels. A proactive approach to problem-solving, continuous improvement and service delivery. The ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a team. Applicants should have one of the following: CCAB part-qualified status (or equivalent) AAT qualification or Significant relevant finance experience demonstrating equivalent technical knowledge and capability.
