Senior Design Engineer Are you an experienced Senior Design Engineer looking for your next challenge? Do you have a strong background in mechanical design, draughting, and product industrialisation within the valve or hydraulics sector? If so, this could be the perfect opportunity for you. Our client, a well-established engineering business, is seeking a Senior Design Engineer to join their team in Birmingham. The successful candidate will have extensive experience in mechanical design, strong 3D CAD capabilities, and a practical understanding of engineering calculations and manufacturing processes. Senior Design Engineer Permanent Position Salary: Competitive (DOE) Monday to Friday Birmingham Senior Design Engineer • Design and develop valves, hydraulic products, and mechanical assemblies from concept through to production • Produce detailed engineering drawings and 3D CAD models in line with BS8888 standards • Create and maintain technical documentation, specifications, and design records • Carry out engineering calculations including pressure and flow calculations using MathCAD templates and hand calculations where required • Support the industrialisation of products, ensuring designs are optimised for manufacture and assembly • Work closely with manufacturing, production, and quality teams to ensure robust product delivery • Modify and improve existing products to enhance performance, reliability, and manufacturability • Support prototype development, testing, and validation activities • Liaise with suppliers, customers, and internal stakeholders throughout the product lifecycle • Ensure designs comply with relevant engineering standards, regulations, and customer requirements • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across engineering and manufacturing processes Senior Design Engineer Essential Experience / Skills / Qualifications • 7+ years' experience in a Senior Design Engineer, Mechanical Design Engineer, or similar position • Experience within the valve and/or hydraulics industry is essential • Strong 3D CAD experience, with exposure to SolidWorks beneficial but not essential • Excellent design and draughting capability with experience working to BS8888 standards • Experience producing engineering drawings for manufacture and assembly • Good understanding of engineering calculations, including pressure and flow calculations • Basic understanding of FEA principles and hand calculations • Experience using or exposure to MathCAD would be advantageous • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and Design for Manufacture (DFM) principles • Experience supporting products from design through to productionisation • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively across multifunctional teams • Degree, HNC, HND, or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline • Strong communication and organisational skills Senior Design Engineer Desirable Experience • Exposure to validation and verification activities • Knowledge of pressure vessel, fluid handling, or hydraulic systems design • Experience working within regulated engineering environments • Familiarity with continuous improvement methodologies and lean manufacturing principles • Experience leading design reviews and mentoring junior engineers If you feel you're a good fit for this position, please click 'apply'.
