Senior Staff Nurse - Chemotherapy Day Unit

The Senior Staff Nurse will be responsible for delivering and coordinating high-quality, patient-centred care within the Chemotherapy Day Unit at Private Care at Guys. Working as part of a specialist oncology and haematology team, the post holder will provide expert clinical care to patients receiving Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatments (SACT), immunotherapies, supportive therapies and other specialist infusions. The role combines advanced clinical practice with day-to-day leadership responsibilities, ensuring the safe and effective operation of the unit while maintaining the highest standards of patient care. The Senior Staff Nurse will act as a role model for nursing excellence, supporting colleagues, promoting professional development and contributing to service improvement initiatives. Key Responsibilities • Deliver safe, effective and evidence-based nursing care to patients undergoing chemotherapy, immunotherapy and other specialist treatments. • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate individualised programmes of care for oncology and haematology patients. • Administer Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatments (SACT) and other prescribed therapies in accordance with local policies, national guidelines and competency requirements. • Monitor patients throughout treatment, recognising and responding appropriately to any changes in their condition. • Provide patients and their families with information, education and emotional support throughout their treatment journey. • Maintain accurate and comprehensive patient records in line with professional and organisational standards. • Promote patient safety, dignity, privacy and wellbeing at all times. • Ensure the safe handling, administration and disposal of chemotherapy agents and other specialist medications. Leadership and Management Responsibilities • Lead and coordinate the day-to-day activities of the Chemotherapy Day Unit during allocated shifts. • Act as shift leader, ensuring safe staffing levels, effective patient flow and efficient utilisation of resources. • Provide clinical leadership and support to nursing colleagues, healthcare assistants and new team members. • Support the induction, supervision, mentorship and development of nursing staff. • Act as a professional role model, demonstrating high standards of clinical practice and professionalism. • Escalate clinical concerns, risks and operational issues appropriately and in a timely manner. • Support the implementation of departmental objectives and service developments. Multidisciplinary Working • Work collaboratively with consultants, pharmacists, allied health professionals and the wider multidisciplinary team to deliver coordinated and effective patient care. • Participate in multidisciplinary discussions and contribute to treatment planning where appropriate. • Develop and maintain positive working relationships across all areas of the service. Quality, Governance and Improvement • Contribute to clinical governance, quality assurance and patient safety initiatives. • Participate in audits, service evaluations and quality improvement projects. • Adhere to organisational policies, professional standards and regulatory requirements. • Identify opportunities to improve patient experience, clinical outcomes and service delivery. • Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control standards, medicines management policies and health and safety regulations.
