Tax Disputes Director North of England | Hybrid Working Available Salary: Competitive (dependent on experience) A specialist boutique tax investigations and dispute resolution firm is seeking an experienced Tax Disputes Director to join its growing leadership team. This is a senior opportunity for an established tax disputes professional who combines strong technical expertise with a proven ability to win new business, develop client relationships, and grow a specialist tax disputes offering. The successful candidate will have extensive experience managing complex HMRC enquiries and disputes, including COP8 and COP9 investigations, alongside the commercial ability and network to generate new opportunities, build referral relationships, and bring in work. This role would suit a senior tax disputes specialist looking for a platform where they can have genuine influence, shape strategy, and play a key role in the continued growth of a boutique firm. Key Responsibilities • Leading complex HMRC tax disputes and investigations, including COP8 and COP9 matters. • Providing strategic advice to high-net-worth individuals, business owners, and professional advisers. • Managing client relationships and acting as a trusted adviser on contentious tax matters. • Developing and executing business development strategies to identify and win new opportunities. • Building strong referral networks with accountants, lawyers, wealth advisers, and other professional intermediaries. • Converting opportunities into new client engagements and contributing directly to revenue growth. • Representing the firm externally through networking, events, and industry engagement. • Supporting the development of the wider tax disputes team and service offering. • Working closely with senior leadership to shape the future direction of the practice. Candidate Requirements • Significant experience in UK tax disputes and HMRC investigations. • Essential: Strong COP8 and COP9 experience. • Proven track record of managing complex tax dispute matters and achieving successful outcomes. • Strong commercial mindset with evidence of winning and developing client relationships. • Ability to generate new business through networks, referrals, and market presence. • Excellent communication skills with the credibility to engage senior clients and professional advisers. Desirable Experience • Previous HMRC experience, particularly within Specialist Investigations, Fraud Investigation Service (FIS), or senior compliance roles, would be highly desirable but is not essential. • Existing network within the tax, legal, accountancy, and professional services markets. • CTA, ACA, or equivalent professional qualification would be advantageous.
