Process Clinical Chemistry samples in accordance with all relevant Clinical Governance, working independently within occupational and departmental policies, procedures and codes of conduct. Perform technical processes in all sections of the laboratory, carrying out laboratory investigations on pathology samples and taking responsibility for quality and accuracy of the results produced. Determine the suitability of specimens arriving in the laboratory and appropriateness for the tests requested. When necessary, advise clinical colleagues of sample issues and proper remedial actions to ensure quality of results and patient care. Prepare specimens for analysis determining urgency and processing priority. Specimens will also include delicate, often small or unrepeatable samples. Interpret complex results and accurately convey this information for interpretation and decisions on reflex testing. Using knowledge and experience, scrutinise anomalous results in light of complex clinical indications to make initial interpretation and prepare results of investigations for communication to senior BMS. Prepare results in a timely manner and promptly inform the requesting clinician of abnormal or clinically significant results where a delay could compromise patient care. Deal with basic enquiries specific to the Clinical Chemistry department, including correct specimen types and collection conditions for a range of clinical situations, ensuring service users needs are met. Undertake preventative maintenance and calibration on complex laboratory instruments and equipment prior to them being used for patient investigations. Carry out first line equipment and basic methodology troubleshooting during technical failures. Risk assess complex situations using professional judgement to ensure safe practice and operation of the analysers often under clinical time pressures, referring to a more senior BMS as necessary. Assist in maintenance and troubleshooting of Point of Care devices, such as the Radiometer ABL90 Flex plus blood gas analysers situated on hospital wards. Where required, be responsible for ensuring adequate reagent levels, stock control and quality checks on reagents and consumables required for laboratory investigations, as directed by the Head of Department. Work flexibly across the wider working patterns of the Clinical Chemistry team. Review and comment on Standard Operating Procedures, in conjunction with senior BMS and the Head of Department, using theoretical knowledge and practical experience to ensure a quality service fit for purpose.
