Rate: £21.00 - £25.00 per hour Umbrella
An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Caretaker to join a well-respected organisation in South East London. This role will be responsible for ensuring the site remains safe, secure, clean, and fully operational, providing a welcoming environment for staff, visitors, and service users.
The successful candidate will play a key role in the day-to-day management of the premises, supporting building operations, carrying out basic maintenance tasks, and liaising with contractors to ensure the smooth running of the site.
Caretaker – Key Responsibilities
• Open and secure the building daily, ensuring the premises remain safe and secure at all times
• Carry out routine inspections of the site and report any maintenance issues or health & safety concerns
• Undertake basic reactive maintenance and minor repairs including painting, plumbing, carpentry, and general handyman duties
• Coordinate and monitor contractors attending the site, ensuring works are completed safely and to the required standard
• Conduct regular health & safety checks, including fire alarm testing, emergency lighting checks, and maintaining compliance records
• Ensure internal and external areas are clean, tidy, and presentable
• Set up rooms and facilities for meetings, events, and operational requirements
• Support waste management and recycling processes across the site
• Monitor building systems and report any faults or service interruptions
• Respond promptly to emergencies and urgent maintenance issues
• Maintain stock levels of cleaning and maintenance supplies
• Liaise effectively with staff, visitors, and external stakeholders to ensure excellent service delivery
Ideal Candidate Profile
• Previous experience working as a Caretaker, Premises Assistant, Site Officer, Facilities Assistant, School Caretaker, or Maintenance Operative
• Experience carrying out minor repairs and general building maintenance
• Good understanding of health & safety procedures and building compliance
• Ability to work independently and manage a varied workload
• Strong communication and customer service skills
• Experience liaising with contractors and supervising works on site
• Reliable, proactive, and hands-on approach to work
• Basic knowledge of building maintenance, site security, and statutory checks
• Enhanced DBS on the Update Service is essential
• Experience working within a school, college, NHS, or public sector environment is desirable
