Job Title: Functional Skills English Tutor
Location: HMP (London, SE28)
Salary: From £30,000 + £5,000 London Weighting per annum
Contract: Permanent, Full-Time

We are recruiting for an inspiring Functional Skills English Tutor to join the education team at HMP Belmarsh. In this deeply rewarding role, you will deliver City & Guilds Functional Skills qualifications from Entry Level 1 through to Level 2. Working with small class sizes (up to 12 learners), you will play a vital role in building confidence, boosting literacy, and supporting learners on their rehabilitation journey.
What You Will Be Doing
• Engaging Delivery: Plan and deliver interactive, inclusive Functional Skills English lessons tailored to small groups of learners with varied educational backgrounds and learning needs.
• Assessment & Tracking: Conduct initial assessments using BKSB diagnostic tools to establish starting points, construct Individual Learning Plans (ILPs), and monitor continuous student progression.
• Innovative Practice: Utilise adaptive learning techniques and digital resources to make English accessible, practical, and engaging for all learners.
• Exam Preparation: Support and prepare learners for formal City & Guilds assessments and qualifications, celebrating their achievements along the way.
• Promoting Literacy: Actively encourage reading for pleasure and promote functional literacy across the wider prison environment.
• Collaborative Working: Partner with prison staff, learning support practitioners, and employability teams to ensure holistic support for every learner.
What We Are Looking For
• Subject Expertise: A Level 3 qualification in English.
• Teaching Background: A Level 5 teaching qualification (PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS, or equivalent) is preferred, though candidates with relevant sector experience willing to work towards a teaching qualification are fully encouraged to apply.
• Functional Skills Experience: Proven experience delivering Functional Skills English qualifications with strong classroom management, lesson planning, and engagement skills.
• Key Skills: Excellent administrative and communication skills, with the ability to adapt teaching methods to support learners with diverse needs and backgrounds.
• Desirable Criteria: Prior experience within a prison education, FE, or adult learning environment, familiarity with BKSB diagnostics, and knowledge of Ofsted's Education Inspection Framework (EIF).
