Registered Nurse

To work as a member of the Hospice multi-disciplinary team to provide a high standard of skilled, compassionate nursing care and symptom management to patients. To provide support to patients, families and carers. Main duties and responsibilities • Maintain a multi-disciplinary team approach to the individualised care of the patient and maintain high standards of nursing care. • Assess the needs of the patient and their family taking into account their physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs. • Be responsible for planning, delivering and evaluating the effectiveness of care given to patients. • Maintain accurate written records of care, communicating all necessary information to other team members. • Participate fully in the setting, implementation and monitoring of formal standards of practice and to be involved, when required, in clinical governance and audit. • Comply with the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council with regard to Professional Registration and to Post-Registration professional education and revalidation. • Communicate appropriately with all patients, visitors and staff, liaise with other departments and agencies and attend departmental meetings as required. • Maintain safe custody of the patients property/ valuables according to the Hospice policy. • Participate in research projects as required. • Participate in full rotation across all shifts including nights. Managerial • Maintain a caring and mutually supportive working environment for all members of staff and volunteers, being sensitive to the emotional needs of colleagues and giving appropriate support to them. • Maintain accurate records with regard to the administration and custody of drugs on the unit. Implement all statutory and unit policies relating to drugs. • Maintain high standards of safety within the unit, reporting any hazardous occurrences or equipment. • Report all accidents, incidents, complaints and untoward occurrences, keeping statutory and unit records as required. • Take charge of the in-patient unit with support from senior colleagues following an appropriate period of assimilation. • Observe fire precautions and procedures as outlined in the Hospice policy. • Welcome both professional and other visitors to the unit. • Exercise care and economy in the use of property and equipment. Education • Assist in the teaching of new staff and volunteers so that they are able to function fully within the team. • Participate in the teaching and guidance of visiting professionals eg Student Nurses, Social Workers and Post Graduate Students. • Communicate skills learnt on secondment or study leave to other members of staff. • Access and positively engage in role-related e-learning as directed by your line manager.
