Job overview To contribute to the delivery of the Shared Services Chemical, Engineering, and Microbiology programme, enabling the Wound Management R&D teams to design, develop, and commercialise new products. Responsibilities R&D Project Delivery (75%) Support a variety of experiments and tests using best practice methods in support of designated new product developments. Involves working to agreed schedules that support challenging project timeframes: • Validation of analytical, physical, mechanical, and electrical test methods. • Laboratory and equipment maintenance, including calibrations. • Prototype evaluation relating to product stability, safety, and transit testing. • Competitor product evaluations to support the commercialisation of the Smith & Nephew product portfolio. Data analysis and reporting (5%) Using agreed formats, record experimental data and methods on work undertaken. This may include presenting initial analysis, conclusions and recommendations as a basis for further discussion and research. May be asked to prepare lab reports. Good House Keeping (20%) Take part in day-to-day housekeeping in order to maintain the professional and safe image of the company. Regularly check chemical and reagent expiry dates within the Laboratory and arrange disposal of out of date material. Provide a regular glassware washing service for the Laboratory. Ensure that all general housekeeping duties are organised and performed to schedule and the laboratories are maintained in a clean and tidy state. Policies and procedures Role holder shall abide at all times to company policies & procedures, and the governing standards & regulations, including (but not limited to): • Any Local Hull site or S+N Global Quality System / Health, Safety & Environment Policy, Procedure or Work Instruction contained in the individual’s training plans. • Applicable standards as defined in the Quality Manual (including but not limited to) • ISO 9001 • ISO 14001 • ISO 13485 • Applicable regulations as defined in the Quality Manual (including but not limited to) • EU Medical Device Directive / Regulation • Regulations issued by the 5 MDSAP Jurisdictions • UK Human Medicines & Medical Device Regulations • cGMP, cGDP (including 2013/C 343/01), cGLP as applicable for each role Competencies • Knowledge/experience of Chemistry, Engineering and/or Microbiology test methodologies, standards and best practice • Organisational and prioritising skills • Ability to innovate and develop practical solutions with support • Ability to clearly convey technical information and ideas to a variety of individuals and groups with different levels of understanding with support • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment in a complex matrix organization with supervision/guidance from management • Must work in strict accordance with the policies and procedures of GMP and Quality Systems standard • Microsoft Office Suite: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook and Internet Explorer Technical Skills (Candidates may specialise in one or more of the following) • Physical and Mechanical Testing: Experience with mechanical manipulation methodologies, e.g., tensile testing. • Microbiology Testing: Proficiency in aseptic technique, ideally with experience in log reduction methodologies and microorganism challenge testing. • Validation Expertise: Experience as a validation engineer, with familiarity in software or equipment validation. The position requires the ability to:- • Concentrate on detailed tasks for sustained periods of time. • When conducting lab testing, needs to undertake repetitive tasks (again, for sustained periods) • Meet deadlines and frequent assignment changes and periodic heavy workload • Operate computer equipment, copy machines, microscopic and laboratory equipment etc. • Communicate with internal customers and external suppliers in person/remotely. • Read complex reference material and written user guides.
