Secondary Tutor (Emotionally Based School Avoidance / Reintegration Support)

We are seeking an experienced, compassionate and engaging Secondary Tutor to support a Year 10 female who is currently out of education due to school refusal. This role is ideal for a tutor with experience supporting vulnerable young people, helping them rebuild confidence, re-engage with learning and successfully reintegrate into education. About the Role You will deliver personalised 1:1 Maths, English and Science tuition, initially face-to-face home sessions and eventually school sessions when appropriate. The successful tutor will work closely with the student to provide both academic support and emotional encouragement throughout their reintegration journey. Key Responsibilities • Deliver engaging, differentiated 1:1 Maths, English and Science tuition at Key Stage 4 level. • Adapt lessons to meet the student's individual learning needs and pace. • Build a positive, trusting relationship that encourages engagement with education. • Support the student's confidence, resilience and motivation. • Work towards reducing learning gaps and preparing the student for a successful return to school. • Provide regular feedback and progress updates following each tuition session. • Follow safeguarding procedures and maintain accurate records. Learning Outcomes The successful tutor will support the student to: • Reduce gaps in the core subjects knowledge and understanding. • Rebuild confidence in academic learning. • Increase engagement with education. • Support a gradual reintegration back into a school environment. The Ideal Candidate We are looking for someone who has: • Experience tutoring or teaching Secondary students • Experience working with students who have experienced school refusal, EBSA, anxiety or other barriers to education. • A calm, patient and empathetic approach. • Excellent relationship-building skills. • The ability to adapt teaching strategies to meet individual needs. • Strong behaviour management and de-escalation skills. • An excellent understanding of safeguarding responsibilities when working with vulnerable young people. Desirable Experience • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or a recognised teaching/tutoring qualification. • Experience delivering online tuition. • Experience supporting reintegration programmes. • Knowledge of trauma-informed practice and emotionally responsive teaching. • Previous experience working with vulnerable adolescents in education or alternative provision. Resources & Support To help you focus on delivering high-quality tuition, all lesson resources and learning materials will be provided. While tutors are welcome to supplement sessions with their own resources where appropriate, you will have access to materials designed to support the student's individual learning objectives and curriculum needs. Ongoing support will also be available from the Zentar Education team throughout the placement. Location: Initially home tuition to transition school-based sessions Start Date: September 2026 Hours: 3 hours per week (after school hours) Hours may increase upon review. Pay: £30 hourly Safeguarding This role involves supporting a vulnerable young person who has identified safeguarding needs. The successful tutor must have a strong understanding of safeguarding, professional boundaries and appropriate reporting procedures. Experience supporting students experiencing emotional distress or mental health challenges is highly desirable.
