Job description
1. To provide specialist technical expertise in Treatment Planning and Mould Room. To analyse and provide solutions to complex, non-standard situations in those areas.
2. To discuss complex aspects of patient treatment with clinicians and scientists and technically interpret patient treatment related information from clinicians and radiographers with regard to VMAT, Treatment planning and Mould Room.
3. To organise work scheduling in Treatment Planning and Mould Room and to adapt schedules several times within the working day in response to unpredictable urgent requests from consultant medical staff.
4. To lead the activities of a specified area of the treatment planning or mould room service, following the direction of the Lead Dosimetrist or Head of Radiotherapy Physics. Lead or support clinical development projects.
5. Professional requirements:
5.1. To maintain HPCP or RCT registration as a clinical technologist
5.2 To be a core member of a relevant professional organisation (e.g IPEM) and to maintain ongoing CPD.
5.3. To maintain knowledge of developments in your professional field, including attendance at relevant training programmes, meetings or conferences
5.4.To maintain familiarity with current developments in Radiotherapy and treatment planning / immobilisation / delineation, including different imaging modalities as required.
5.5.To responsibly exercise the freedom to prioritise and manage his/her own work, maintaining a productive balance between day to day operational problems and work on development projects.
5.6. To work with considerable autonomy when dealing with issues within the specialist areas of competence, guided by professional principles and Trust broad occupational policies
6. Treatment Planning
6.1. To determine and process patient outlining including complex outlines for dose prediction and produce predictions for the treatment planning of patients using Computer Aided Design software. To use technical judgement to produce the optimum treatment plan from a range of options.
6.2. To calculate treatment machine settings including complex dose delivery.
6.3. To maintain records of all outlining, treatment planning and calculations.
7. Mould Room
7.1. To take impressions from patients for the production of individualised immobilisation and shielding devices including complex impressions.
7.2. To explain complex technical aspects of impressions, immobilisation and treatment and ensure the cooperation of patients who may be distressed and/or confused.
7.3. To ensure that in all aspects of the work the adequate care and well-being of the patient is taken into account.
7.4. To manufacture fixation devices, blocking devices and build-up materials for patient treatment including complex devices, by the use of fine precision tools.
8. Treatment machine quality control
8.1. To carry out quality control checks on highly complex radiotherapy equipment, following protocols agreed with radiotherapy physicists.
8.2. To ensure that quality control checks which directly affect radiation dose to the patient are carried out with strict reference to procedures and safety tolerance levels set out in the quality system.
9.Training:
9.1. To provide supervision relevant to the role of trainees who are being supported by the department, helping them to achieve their training goals.
9.2.Regularly delivers training on areas of clinical need to small groups of staff and students, using a range of teaching methods and evaluating learning outcomes to ensure understanding and competence.
10. Quality System:
10.1.To contribute to the development and maintenance of the Radiotherapy Quality System.
11.To design and develop spreadsheets and databases for use in all aspects of radiotherapy physics and its management.
12. To participate in service development initiated by themselves or other members of the Radiotherapy team.
13. To minimise financial costs by safe and effective use of high capital value equipment in excess of £30,000.
14. To work such unsocial hours as are necessary for the safe and effective performance of their duties. To participate in rotas to support weekend emergency on-call treatments, or provision of the clinical service on or around bank holidays.
15. To cover the work of colleagues during periods of absence or peak workload and deputise for the Lead Dosimetrist when required.
16. To undertake any other duties required by the Head of Radiotherapy Physics in accordance with the grade and nature of the post.
