JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Part-time Practice Nurse Hours: Zero Holiday: Additional payment Study Leave: Additional payment Salary: Dependant on experience Location: Elm Tree Surgery, Shrivenham SN6 8AG. May required occasional work elsewhere such as local village halls, patients homes or at other surgeries within the Brunel Health Group Accountable: Partners Accountable for: Health Care Assistant This post is as a sixteen hours a week Practice Nurse (PN) at Elm Tree Surgery with the possibility of occasional work elsewhere for example at local village halls, patients homes or other Brunel Health Group surgeries in Swindon. The PN will integrate with the existing nursing team and will liaise with the other members of the Practice team, doctors, receptionists and secretaries together with other staff attached to the Practice. Duties and Responsibilities The post holder will provide general practice nursing care to the patients of the Practice. S/he will be competent to assess and manage the nursing needs of patients either independently or with the General Practitioners (GPs) as appropriate in accordance with Practice policies. The role of PN in the Practice is continuing to develop and the appointed PN will fully participate in this expansion of the role either by having special skills, or by developing such skills, including undertaking additional training, as are deemed appropriate by the Practice. There will be an expectation that the appointed PN will be willing, able and competent to develop this enhanced role. The PN will fully document all assessment and delivery of care in the patients medical record, and will record such data about patients as is required by Practice policies both in the written and computer record as appropriate. The PN will be expected to keep fully up to date with all areas of his/her responsibility in accordance with good clinical governance practice and legal requirements. The post holder will have, or will be able to develop, the following abilities: competence in providing general nursing for patients within the Practice competence in the assessment and management of wounds and skin conditions, including ulcers, deciding on and providing appropriate care competence in giving immunisations to adults and children in accordance with national immunisation policies, organising necessary clinics and the provision of other subcutaneous or intramuscular injections be able to provide full and competent assessment and management of minor illness and injury with referral to a GP if appropriate; be able to triage such patients both in person and over the telephone; be able to prescribe medications, dressings and other items where appropriate in accordance with Practice policy and their own competence be able to provide the appropriate care for patients with chronic disease, including their call and recall, assessment and management and the recording of data required by the Practice in accordance with Practice policies; and will have the ability to develop specialised skills to undertake the lead role in the nursing team for particular areas of chronic disease management competence to undertake health screening of patients in accordance with Practice policies. the provision of travel advice and immunisations and advice on malaria and other prophylactic measures for travellers competence to complete NHS Health Checks. Completion of the annual infection control audit. General Treatment Room Duties The appointed PN will be able to undertake the full range of treatment room duties and will supervise those undertaken by the Health Care Assistant. This will include preparation of the treatment room and patients for minor surgical procedures and assisting the doctor undertaking them ensuring that equipment is washed and sterilised and that infection control measures are undertaken in accordance with Practice policy performance of various treatment room procedures including venepuncture, ear syringing, eye-washing, ECG recording, audiometry, tympanometry and spirometry and such other procedures as may be introduced ensuring the treatment room is properly stocked liaison with other bodies such as vaccine suppliers, travel advisory services, hospitals, and other health service bodies as appropriate. Conditions of Employment Employment will be conditional on the following: maintenance of full registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council eligibility for employment in the United Kingdom demonstration of a commitment to continuing professional development DBS Check full, up to date, immunisation for hepatitis B willingness to receive any other vaccine that the Department of Health or CQC recommends as necessary for nursing staff as a consequence of their employment attendance at all relevant educational events within the Practice which may require attendance outside normal working hours attendance at Practice meetings which may require attendance outside normal working hours The appointed person will be eligible to join the NHS pension scheme.
